"People often think of boundaries as just "saying no or setting limits," but this view is overly simplistic. Rosenberg and Rand (1991) define being boundaried as "the sense of experience of self that is separate from the world yet exists in harmonious relationship within in" (p. 175).
"Being boundaried means being clear about who you are and what is your responsibility, you have a right to your inner life, and you are responsible for your own behavior and your inner life. It is also about respecting that you do not have a right to or a responsibility for your client's behavior and inner life. In general it is when you think that you are responsible for what goes on inside the others self that you have violated his or her boundaries and the therapeutic aspect of therapy is lost . A well boundaried therapist knows to ask permission when she or he wants to explore aspects of the clients inner life, especially the more sensitive aspects of it." (Taken from Counseling and Therapy Skills by David Martin, p. 204) Jen Wah says: Everyone is responsible for their own inner world. No one can control your thinking except you. No one is inside your mind thinking for you, except you. Other minds can and do influence your thinking, but at the root of it all it is up to you to get present and conscious enough to control what thoughts you will place your attention on and what thoughts you will completely reject and remove your attention from. Where is the root of your attention arising from? Who is aware? Your attention is GOLD. Your awareness is your eternal self and it never changes, amongst all the changing states of mind and physical realities. You can train yourself, with practice to control where you put your attention. You can train yourself with practice and presence to control what stories you allow your mind to entertain. At the same time you can grow this inner power, there is also a balance that is necessary to cultivate within and that is the balance of allowing, listening and allowing your unconscious psyche to reveal itself TO YOU. Yes, your psyche reveals itself to you. This can happen at any time. During meditation, during exercise, while cooking, walking, in conversation etc. But certainly conscious practices are conducive to engaging with the unconscious. So as much as it is important to be disciplined with your attention and mindset, it is also as important to be surrendured, listening, allowing, being present in the unknown and openly receiving the revelation from deep within.
